Documents you need to bring:-

  • Bring atleat 8 passport size photos and 8 stamp size photos.
  • Bring your original mark sheets and few copies of each sheet (preferably attested).
  • Bring your offer letter, fees paid(KVPY fellows don't forget to bring your KVPY offer letter).
  • Bring Passport or PAN card, etc (if you have for age and address proof; needed for creating bank accounts).
  • Bring your Bank passbook, cheque book, ATM cards(SBI and Canara Banks are the only banks inside IISc; so if you already have an account in these banks you can transfer your account to IISc branch).
Things you need to buy before coming to IISc :-
  • Buy a mobile (if you don't have one, because Mom needs to wake you up right) . You can buy sim cards inside the campus. Idea is the best network in the hostels.
  • Buy 2-3 locks for your room(often you need to break your lock because you will loose your keys).
  • Buy a Rain coat (You never know when it will rain).
  • Buy a sweater or jacket (bangalore winter is really cold).
  • Buy Blankets , quilt, window screen etc(if you need it).
  • Buy a torch (though there is hardly any power shutdown).
  • Buy a Laptop if possible(Though you will be given user accounts in SERC, Laptop will be really useful thought your course work, Also mom's not there to scold you when you play Dota, GTA or CounterStrike; ).
Travelling:-
  • Try to reach IISc atleast one day before your admission date. Ensure you have all the documents mentioned above. If you haven't purchased any of the above mentioned, you can do it after your admission. 
  • Reaching IISc:-  
    IISc is 6 km away from the main railway station and bus stand (commonly called Majestic) and 38 km from the airport. Prepaid taxis or autos are available from this place. I'll suggest you can take either of this or take a bus. Always use the word Tata Institute, else you may end up in IIM if you ask for IISc. 
  • If you are coming on July 27/28/29/30, then the student council of IISc will pick you up from the Bangalore city station and Yeshwanthpur station. Buses with IISc banners will be there in the parking lot.


Things you need to do after coming to IISc :-
  • On the date of reporting, go to the faculty hall in the main building.  You will be given a 16 digit student registration number (SRN) after verification of your offer letter, etc and other formalities. Your first job in IISc is to memorize your SR number(last 5 digits) because you will require it everywhere. Please take your photographs with you and you may have to stick it in many places.
  • Next, visit the hostel office. Show the proof of hostel fees paid and ask for a room allotment. You will be allotted a room and given a room allotment letter, which will serve as your proof of residence. You will be also given Mess id cards to dine in the D Mess.
  • You will have your orientation program on 1st August and make sure you attend it. 
  • Next, visit either SBI or Canara Bank and get a new account.


Things you need to buy after coming to IISc :-
  • Buy a bicycle.(Bicycle vendors will be coming to IISc during admission days).
  • Buy a bed. (Vendors will be coming to IISc during admission days and will be selling bed and pillows opposite to hosel office; buy a good quality bed and pillows because you will be using it for the next 4 years).
  • Buy a SIM card(Mobile vendors will have stalls opposite to the hostel office during admission days; BSNL office is near the main building).
  • Buy bucket and mugs (You will find these in the General Stores; ask anyone inside the campus-they will guide you).
  • Buy Stationaries and other essentials (Hangers, Toothpaste, Notebooks, rope, etc; You will find these in the General stores and the store opposite to Hostel office).
